Classroom management is a term teachers use to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly without disruptive behaviour from students compromising the delivery of instruction. It is crucial in classrooms because it supports the proper execution of curriculum development, developing best teaching practices, and putting them into action. In an effort to ensure all students receive the best education and educators and instructors are well versed in classroom management, a workshop was conducted in Shalom Presidency school on this vital component of education.

The resource person Ms. Vandana Tandon initiated the workshop by stressing upon a very crucial fact that to create a mutually beneficial environment at any workplace it is important for the employee to enjoy his work and feel happy and satisfied. Hence mental and physical well being of both the educators and the students is pertinent. She talked about the signs of unhealthy mind and body of students which an educator must learn to read and address. For a healthier classroom environment, she suggested the teachers to include the fun factor on a regular basis. She advised them to introspect from time to time on how creative and interesting their lessons are. The road of communication of a teacher with each child should be open all the time. An educator should always be approachable. The mere way in which a teacher enters a class decides the learning atmosphere. Hence the body language matters a lot. Actually, it is a teacher’s attitude and eye contact that make the children comfortable and set the mood right.

It is the responsibility of an educator to train children in maintaining a positive and healthy classroom ambience. First and foremost, the sitting posture of the children should be rectified. Any sign of physical discomfort should be addressed promptly. Training them to be better organised and prepared for the classroom teaching would also prove helpful. Paying equal attention to all discourages favouritism. Making oneself clear without repeating and meaning what one says are other techniques to manage classrooms. Being sensitive to the emotional needs of children is the call of the time. One also must be aware of one’s reactions and be watchful of the tone and volume of voice with children. Taking constant feedback on all the aspects of a classroom encourages a teacher to keep modifying and innovating. The resource person answered the queries and challenges of the teachers present and parted with the most valuable of all advises “Always keep believing in your students and their aspirations.”

Sports are a bliss for an individual as well as society. Participation in spports and games not only teaches self-discipline, team spirit and humility but also inculcates a never dying spirit. A sportsman never gives up. It also presents numerous examples of excellence to the society to emulate. Hence sports are an integral part of Shalom Presidency School. Keeping up with the tradition of the school, an Annual Athletic Meet was organized for the students of the school. There were various events in each category for the children to compete in. The students gave their best and enjoyed this great learning opportunity. This event brought smiles of well-deserved satisfaction on some faces and some learnt how to lose graciously and to be happy in other’s happiness.

The most awaited moment of any competition is the prize distribution ceremony. On 14th of December2018 the wait of the winners came to an end. It was the day of prize distribution ceremony. Cartooning or illustration is an integral part of literature which makes stories come alive and etch the images of the characters in our minds forever. But we rarely get a chance to peek into the world of cartoons and cartoonists. Fortunately, the students of Shalom Presidency were provided this precious opportunity through an interactive session with the eminent cartoonist, illustrator and author, Ajit Narayan on 12th December 2018.

Mr. Ajit Narayan, a master of his art has an illustrious career to boast of. Opening the session, he ensured that children understand two vital facts that what is a cartoon and who is a cartoonist. Summing up the responses of the children he highlighted that a cartoon is an amusing line drawing and the bottom line for a cartoonist is humour and imagination. To spark the imagination and creativity he put up few challenges to the children by drawing clues with the help of geometrical shapes requesting them to draw something with those figures. The enthusiasm of the children proved to be infectious. Each child was on his toes to draw and earn his approval and appreciation. Next it was time to share a few tricks, techniques and secrets of cartooning and Mr. Ajit shared these through the drawings of the two most expressive parts of human body – face and hand. He demonstrated how anybody can draw different expressions of a human face with few simple strokes. He also talked about the three-finger technique of Walt Disney. In the last segment he ignited the minds of our budding artists to be more creative by giving human expressions to simple everyday objects through cartooning. The children enjoyed thoroughly which was quite evident by the smiles with which they left the conference hall, thanks to the inspiring presence of such an eminent personality.

Having a progressive perspective always compels one to explore new frontiers. A true reflection of this are the extra initiatives taken by Shalom Presidency through workshops and talks conducted on a regular basis. Keeping up the tradition, an interactive math workshop was conducted for parents on 1st Dec 2018 at the school’s conference hall. The resource person Mr. Pankaj Jha, a mathematician par excellence and a parent himself, gave the audience educational and mathematical food for thought.

This workshop initiated with the most vital question of what true learning is. The resource person reinstated the fact that developing one’s own understanding and perspective about a topic is true learning. He insisted that thinking is important, and it should be flexible. This leads to the development of multiple approach towards the same concept. He had a few appreciable ideas for parents on how to guide and help children in the right direction.

In the second segment of the workshop, which was titled ‘Beauty and Elegance of Mathematics’, Mr. Jha emphasised that it is necessary and crucial for a person to understand why and how the concept is important. He took up very interesting examples like ‘Golden Ratio’ from the field of math to prove that how understanding of ‘Why ‘and ‘How’ can generate further interest in a concept. He revealed that mathematics is not only about observation of patterns but also about proving them.

Later half of the workshop was dedicated to guiding parents on making right decisions for the higher education of their children. According to him international educational exposure is the key to inculcating a multidimensional creativity in our childre. Arming children with skills, especially technical skills, along with degrees is another dimension because this is where the world is moving. He also threw light on the criteria of international admissions. Having a backup plan is the other thing to be taken very seriously by the parents.

During the interactive session at the end parents came out with varied questions and doubts satisfactorily answered by the resource person by giving real live examples. The parents were also benefitted by the knowledge of fellow participants.

Maths can be made more interesting by using the objects in our surrounding. The students were taught the concept of Pattern and Symmetry by using the articles shared with them in a box. The articles were of different shape, size, pattern and colour. Students brightened up to see the box with different shapes and pattern. They were enthralled to create their own patterns. The little mathematicians got to work and created their own patterns with the objects and pasted the same on their named coloured sheet.
